Is Pine Wood Good for Furniture? While pine is very different than oak, it is also a good choice for furniture, depending on your purpose. It may not last quite as long as oak, but pine is still a strong, shock-resistant material suitable for furniture, particularly if you like the rustic or country styles.
Might pine furniture sustain nicks or dents more easily than other harder woods? The answer is yes, but that does not take it out of the running for serving your home furniture collection well. When it's built well, pine furniture can last for decades just like hardwoods.
Although pine is easy to cut and shape, it can be difficult to finish because it is easily scratched and dented and tends to soak up finishes. Before applying any finish, it is essential to carefully sand the wood to remove all scratches and create a smooth surface.
The look of natural wood is timeless, but pine can also be painted or stained easily to achieve an individual style or if you want to refresh your interiors in the future without investing in brand new furniture.
Pine takes on a pale yellow-orange tone after exposure to sunlight. Most finishes exacerbate the problem leaving wood which ages to a "cigarette yellow" tone. The best way to create a pale bleached effect is to treat with a thin coat of diluted White Wood Dye after sanding.
Pine is actually an excellent table top material. It will pick up dents and scratches over the years. It will, however, last a very long time. If well made, the table should last for a few decades at least.
Yes, Pine wood is strong. It is a very stiff softwood with relatively high compressive strength, density, and bending strength than most other softwoods. This makes pine wood strong and durable to use for making furniture, paneling, window frames, roofing, and many other woodworks.
